Our back patio has been rather uninviting these last two years. It's a small 6 x 6 cement square that housed nothing the first year and a plastic wading pool the second. Inspired by Oprah's "Claim the space!" and these play areas
http://www.freeplaynetwork.org.uk/playlink/exhibition/playgrounds/frysja2.htm, we dragged a bunch of unused logs from the Highland Park maintenance area out back (I did ask for permission) and put together a table and chairs set. Then we potted some lettuce and herb seedlings in one corner. Now this is a space where we eat, play, sit and really enjoy. If the rabbits don't beat us, there might also be a small harvest of lettuces (mesclun, buttercrunch, red sails, salad bowl), arugula, mint, parsley, cilantro, and thyme in a few weeks.
